Key SaaS Metrics Every Founder Should Track

Running a SaaS business without tracking your core metrics is like flying blind. Whether you are preparing for fundraising, optimizing growth, or just trying to build a sustainable business, these metrics tell you where you stand and what to focus on next.

The Metrics Investors Care About Most

• ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue): The annualized version of your MRR. This is the headline number investors use to gauge your scale. Series A typically requires $1-3M ARR, Series B $5-15M+.
• Net Revenue Retention (NRR): Measures how much revenue you retain and expand from existing customers, excluding new sales. Top SaaS companies achieve 120-150% NRR, meaning existing customers alone drive 20-50% revenue growth.
• LTV:CAC Ratio: The ratio of customer lifetime value to customer acquisition cost. A ratio of 3:1 or higher means your unit economics are healthy. Below 1:1 means you lose money on every customer.
• Monthly Churn Rate: The percentage of customers who cancel each month. For SMB SaaS, 3-5% monthly churn is typical. For enterprise, less than 1% is the target. Even small improvements in churn have massive compounding effects.

Benchmark Ranges

Healthy SaaS metrics vary by stage and market segment. Early-stage startups (pre-product-market fit) often have higher churn and shorter payback periods. At scale, the benchmarks tighten. As a general guide: monthly churn below 3% is good, LTV:CAC above 3x is healthy, CAC payback under 12 months is efficient, and a quick ratio above 4 indicates strong growth efficiency.

What Is the Quick Ratio?

The SaaS quick ratio measures growth efficiency by dividing new MRR (new customers + expansion) by lost MRR (churn + contraction). A quick ratio of 4 or higher means for every $1 lost, you gain $4 — a sign of efficient, sustainable growth. Below 2 suggests your growth is being eaten by churn.

Burn Rate and Runway

Burn rate is the difference between your operating expenses and your revenue. Runway is how many months you can survive at your current burn rate before running out of cash. Most investors want to see at least 12-18 months of runway. If your runway drops below 6 months, it is time to either raise money, cut costs, or find a path to profitability immediately.
