Most brands approach creator sponsorships through one of two pricing models: CPM-based pricing or flat-fee deals. CPM (cost per mille, or cost per thousand impressions) is the industry standard for media buying. A brand with a $50 CPM budget expects to pay $50 for every 1,000 people who see the sponsored content. If your video averages 100,000 views, a $25 CPM translates to a $2,500 sponsorship fee.
Flat-fee deals, on the other hand, are negotiated based on perceived value, creator reputation, and the campaign's goals. Brands with limited influencer marketing experience tend to default to flat fees because they are easier to budget. However, experienced media buyers almost always think in CPM terms, even when they quote a flat number. Understanding this gives you leverage: if a brand offers $500 for a video that gets 200,000 views, you can point out that their effective CPM is only $2.50 — far below industry benchmarks — and negotiate upward with data.
Follower count is a vanity metric. A creator with 500,000 followers and a 0.5% engagement rate delivers less value than a creator with 50,000 followers and an 8% engagement rate. Brands increasingly track engagement rate — the percentage of your audience that actively likes, comments, saves, or shares your content — as the primary signal of influence.
High engagement indicates that your audience trusts your recommendations, pays attention to your content, and is more likely to act on a call to action. This is why micro-influencers (10,000–100,000 followers) often command higher CPMs than mega-influencers: their audiences are more loyal and responsive. When pitching brands, always lead with engagement data, not follower counts. Include screenshots of your analytics showing comments, saves, and click- through rates.
A rate card is a one-page document (or section of your media kit) that lists your pricing for different content types. It signals to brands that you are a professional who has thought carefully about their value. A strong rate card includes your audience demographics, average reach and engagement metrics, pricing per content type (dedicated post, story, mention, etc.), package deals and retainer options, and usage rights and exclusivity terms.
Format matters. Use clean design, include your branding, and present rates as starting points. Phrases like “Starting at $X” or “From $X” leave room for negotiation while anchoring the conversation at a number that works for you. Always quote high. Your first number should be 20–30% above your target rate. Brands expect to negotiate, and starting higher gives you room to offer a “discount” while still landing at a number you are happy with.
Offer packages. Instead of negotiating down on a single post, offer a bundle: “I can do one dedicated video for $3,000 or three posts across platforms for $7,500.” Packages increase your total deal value while giving the brand perceived savings.
Have a media kit. Brands that receive a polished media kit with audience data, past campaign results, and clear pricing are far more likely to agree to your rates. It reframes the conversation from “How much do you charge?” to “How do we work together?”
Know your walk-away number. Before any negotiation, decide the minimum you will accept. If a brand cannot meet it, politely decline. Underpricing your work establishes a low anchor that follows you through future deals.
Not every brand deal is worth taking. Watch for these warning signs: requests for free work in exchange for “exposure” (your content is the exposure — that is what they are paying for); no written contract or scope of work; demands for perpetual usage rights without additional compensation; vague deliverables that keep expanding after you agree; payment terms longer than 30 days with no upfront deposit; and brands that refuse to let you disclose the partnership, which may violate FTC guidelines.
Always use a contract, even for small deals. At minimum it should cover deliverables, deadlines, payment amount and schedule, revision limits, usage rights and duration, and exclusivity terms (if any). A one-page agreement protects both sides and sets professional expectations.
YouTube commands some of the highest sponsorship CPMs ($20–$50) because videos are long-form, searchable, and have a long shelf life. A sponsored integration in a 10-minute video continues to generate impressions for months or years. Dedicated sponsorship videos naturally command a premium over 30-second integrations.
Instagram rates ($10–$25 CPM) depend heavily on content type. A carousel post with a swipe-up link drives more measurable value than a single static image. Reels have expanded reach but currently command lower CPMs than feed posts because completion rates are lower.
TikTok ($5–$15 CPM) has the lowest barrier to virality, but also the most volatile view counts. Brands value TikTok for awareness campaigns rather than direct conversions. Creators who can demonstrate consistent view counts (not just one viral hit) command higher rates.
Podcasts ($18–$50 CPM) benefit from intimate, trust-based relationships between hosts and listeners. A 60-second host-read ad is more persuasive than a pre-produced spot, which is why host-read rates are higher. Downloads are the standard metric, though some brands also track unique listeners.
Newsletters ($15–$40 CPM) are priced on opens, not sends. A 50,000-subscriber newsletter with a 40% open rate sells against 20,000 opens. High click-through rates (above 2%) let you charge at the top of the range. Dedicated send sponsorships (the entire email is about one brand) command significantly more than a banner or classified ad.
Twitter / X ($5–$12 CPM) has the lowest rates among major platforms because tweet impressions are fleeting and engagement is harder to measure. However, creators in finance, tech, and B2B niches can command much higher CPMs because their audiences have high purchasing power and decision-making authority.
Blog ($8–$20 CPM) sponsorships are often underpriced relative to their SEO value. A sponsored blog post that ranks on Google delivers impressions indefinitely. Creators should factor in the long-tail traffic value when pricing blog sponsorships, and consider time-limited vs. evergreen pricing models.
