How well can you perceive color? Three tests will measure your ability to distinguish subtle hues, sort gradients, and recall colors from memory.
A Color IQ test measures your ability to perceive subtle differences in hue, saturation, and lightness. While most humans can distinguish around 1 million colors, individual ability varies enormously β some people have exceptional color discrimination, while others may have mild color vision deficiencies without even knowing it.
Research shows that women statistically outperform men on color discrimination tasks, partly because the genes for red and green cone pigments sit on the X chromosome β having two copies provides more genetic diversity in cone sensitivity. Professional colorists, painters, and textile workers also develop superior color perception through years of training. Some rare individuals known as tetrachromats may possess a fourth type of cone cell, giving them access to millions more distinguishable colors.
