Most Indian universities affiliated with the University Grants Commission (UGC) follow the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a 10-point grading scale. Under CBCS, each course carries a certain number of credits based on its lecture, tutorial, and practical hours. Your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is the credit-weighted average of your grade points in a single semester, while your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the weighted average across all semesters.
The grade points range from O (Outstanding) at 10.0 down to F (Fail) at 0.0. To convert CGPA to an approximate percentage, many universities use the formula: Percentage = (CGPA โ 0.5) ร 10. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 translates to roughly 80 per cent. However, this formula varies across institutions โ always check your university's official conversion policy.
Your SGPA reflects performance in a single semester, while CGPA reflects your entire programme. To calculate CGPA from multiple SGPAs, multiply each semester's SGPA by the total credits earned in that semester, sum the products, and divide by total programme credits. This calculator handles both โ enter your current semester courses to find your SGPA, or enter all courses across semesters for your CGPA.
When applying to foreign universities, particularly in the US, UK, or Canada, you will often need to convert your CGPA to a 4.0 GPA or percentage. WES (World Education Services) is a widely accepted credential evaluation service for this purpose. A CGPA of 8.0 and above on the Indian 10-point scale is generally considered competitive for top international programmes. Focus on high-credit core courses to maximise your CGPA, and remember that many Indian universities allow grade improvement through supplementary examinations.
