South Korean universities use either a 4.5-point or 4.3-point GPA scale. The 4.5 scale is used by the majority of institutions including Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University (the SKY universities). Under this system, grades are: A+ (4.5), A0 (4.0), B+ (3.5), B0 (3.0), C+ (2.5), C0 (2.0), D+ (1.5), D0 (1.0), and F (0.0). Some universities instead use the 4.3 scale, which includes plus/minus variants for each letter grade.
Your GPA (학점 평균, hakjeom pyeong-gyun) is calculated the same way as in most systems: multiply each grade by its credit weight, sum the results, and divide by total credits. Typical Korean university courses are worth 2 or 3 credits, with lab courses sometimes worth 1 credit.
Korean universities award Latin honours based on cumulative GPA: summa cum laude (typically 4.3+ on a 4.5 scale), magna cum laude (3.8–4.29), and cum laude (3.5–3.79). These distinctions appear on your degree certificate and are highly valued by employers, particularly at the major conglomerates (chaebol) like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. Many graduate programmes in Korea require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the 4.5 scale.
When applying to US graduate schools, be aware that the Korean 4.5 scale does not directly map to the US 4.0 scale. A Korean 4.0/4.5 is roughly equivalent to a US 3.55/4.0. WES and ECE offer formal evaluations if needed. Take advantage of grade retake policies (재수강) offered by most Korean universities — you can retake a course to replace a low grade, though some institutions cap the replacement grade at A0.
