Japanese universities traditionally used a pass/fail system with broad grade bands: η§ (ShΕ«, Excellent), εͺ (YΕ«, Very Good), θ― (RyΕ, Good), ε― (Ka, Acceptable), and δΈε― (Fuka, Fail). Since the 2000s, most universities have adopted a GPA system alongside these traditional grades. The standard Japanese GPA maps S or η§ to 4.0, A or εͺ to 3.0, B or θ― to 2.0, C or ε― to 1.0, and F to 0.0. Some universities use an extended scale with A+ at 4.3.
Typical courses at Japanese universities are worth 2 credits (εδ½, tani), with seminars sometimes worth 4 credits. A full-time student takes approximately 20β24 credits per semester. The minimum GPA for good academic standing varies by university but is typically around 2.0. Many Japanese universities have adopted the GPA system relatively recently, so older transcripts may only show the traditional grade letters without point values.
If you are applying to graduate schools abroad, note that the standard Japanese GPA system maps wide grade bands to each point value (e.g., 80β89% all receive a 3.0), which can make your GPA appear lower than an equivalent American student's. Provide your university's grading policy when applying and consider requesting a WES evaluation for a fair conversion. Many competitive international programmes are aware of this characteristic of the Japanese system.
