Mexican universities use a 0–10 grading scale where 6 is the standard minimum passing grade, though some institutions and programmes require a 7 or 8 to pass. Your overall grade average (promedio general) is typically a credit-weighted mean of your course grades. Universities like UNAM, Tec de Monterrey, and IPN all use the 0–10 system, though their internal policies on failing and retaking courses differ.
The promedio is crucial in Mexico for scholarship applications (CONACYT and institutional scholarships), graduate programme admissions, and honours distinctions. A promedio of 9.0 or above is considered excellent and may qualify you for mención honorífica (honourable mention) at graduation. Many competitive postgraduate programmes require a minimum promedio of 8.0.
When applying to US or European universities, your Mexican promedio will need to be converted. A rough conversion: 9–10 ≈ A (3.7–4.0 GPA), 8–8.9 ≈ B+ (3.0–3.6), 7–7.9 ≈ B- (2.3–2.9), 6–6.9 ≈ C (2.0–2.2). WES and ECE provide formal credential evaluations accepted by most international institutions. CONACYT scholarships for international study typically require a promedio of 8.0 or higher.
