Brazilian universities use a 0–10 grading scale, where the minimum passing grade varies between 5.0 and 7.0 depending on the institution. Most federal universities (universidades federais) set the passing mark at 5.0, while some private institutions require 6.0 or 7.0. Your overall academic performance is measured by the CR (Coeficiente de Rendimento) or IRA (Índice de Rendimento Acadêmico), which is a credit-weighted average of all your course grades.
Each course (disciplina) carries a number of credits based on its weekly contact hours, typically ranging from 2 to 6 credits. Your CR is calculated by multiplying each course grade by its credit value, summing the products, and dividing by total credits attempted. Some universities distinguish between CR and IRA, where IRA may also factor in the number of times a course was attempted.
When applying to international programmes, a Brazilian 8.0/10 is generally considered equivalent to a US 3.5/4.0 GPA. The approximate conversion is: 9–10 ≈ A (3.7–4.0), 7–8.9 ≈ B (3.0–3.6), 5–6.9 ≈ C (2.0–2.9), and below 5 ≈ F. CAPES (Brazil's federal agency for postgraduate education) provides scholarship rankings partly based on CR, making a high CR essential for funded postgraduate opportunities in Brazil.
