Philippine universities and colleges use a 1.0–5.0 grading scale where 1.0 is the highest grade and 5.0 is a failing mark — the reverse of the American system. The passing grade is typically 3.0 (equivalent to 75%). Each course is assigned a number of units based on its lecture and laboratory hours, usually ranging from 1 to 5 units. Your General Weighted Average (GWA) is calculated by multiplying each course grade by its unit weight, summing the products, and dividing by total units.
The GWA determines academic honours at graduation: summa cum laude (typically GWA of 1.00–1.20), magna cum laude (1.21–1.45), and cum laude (1.46–1.75). These thresholds vary between institutions — the University of the Philippines, for instance, has stricter requirements than many other schools. CHED (Commission on Higher Education) oversees standards across the country, but individual institutions set their own grading policies.
Since the Philippine scale is inverted (lower is better), it can cause confusion when applying abroad. A Filipino 1.50 is excellent, roughly equivalent to a US 3.7 GPA. When applying to international programmes, always clarify that your system uses 1.0 as the highest possible grade. WES and similar services can provide formal conversions. Focus on high-unit major courses to maximise the impact of good grades on your GWA, and be aware that INC (Incomplete) and DRP (Dropped) marks can affect your GWA calculation at some schools.
