New Zealand universities use a GPA scale from 0 to 9, which is unique internationally. The NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority) standard maps letter grades to GPA values: A+ equals 9, A equals 8, A- equals 7, B+ equals 6, B equals 5, B- equals 4, C+ equals 3, C equals 2, C- equals 1, and D or lower equals 0. The minimum passing grade is typically C- (50%). Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each paper's grade value by its points (credits), summing the products, and dividing by total points.
New Zealand uses 'points' rather than credits or units β a standard full-time course load is 120 points per year (60 per semester), with most papers worth 15 or 20 points. The 0β9 GPA scale can be confusing for international applications since it does not directly correspond to the US 4.0 or Australian 7.0 scales. Universities like Auckland, Otago, Victoria, and Canterbury all use this standardised system.
When applying to US graduate programmes, a rough conversion is: NZ GPA 7β9 β US 3.7β4.0 (A range), 5β6 β US 3.0β3.6 (B range), 2β4 β US 2.0β2.9 (C range). For Honours programmes in NZ, most universities require a minimum GPA of 5.0 (B average) in your major. First Class Honours typically requires a GPA of 8.0 or above. NZQA provides formal qualification recognition for international use.
