Need to convert your grades for a different country? Try one of these calculators:
Australian universities primarily use a letter-grade system with five tiers: High Distinction (HD, typically 85–100%), Distinction (D, 75–84%), Credit (CR, 65–74%), Pass (P, 50–64%), and Fail (F, below 50%). These letter grades translate to a 7-point GPA scale used by most institutions, where HD equals 7, D equals 6, CR equals 5, P equals 4, and F equals 0. Some universities, including those in the Group of Eight (Go8), use a 4.0 scale instead.
The Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is another key metric used in Australia. Your WAM is the credit-weighted average of your raw percentage marks across all units. Many Honours programmes, scholarships, and postgraduate entry requirements specify a minimum WAM rather than a GPA. A WAM of 75 or above is generally considered equivalent to a Distinction average and is highly competitive for graduate entry.
While GPA and WAM both measure academic performance, they serve different purposes. GPA is calculated from grade bands (HD, D, CR, P, F) and cannot distinguish between a student who scored 85% and one who scored 99% — both receive an HD worth 7.0 grade points. WAM, by contrast, preserves the exact percentage mark and gives a more granular picture. Most Australian universities report both on your academic transcript, but many professional programmes and employers prefer to see your WAM.
If you are applying to US or UK graduate programmes, you will likely need to convert your Australian GPA. A rough guide: an Australian 7.0 (HD) corresponds roughly to a US 4.0 or UK First, a 6.0 (D) to a US 3.5–3.9 or UK 2:1, and a 5.0 (CR) to a US 3.0–3.4 or UK 2:2. Many universities accept a WES credential evaluation for a formal conversion. When calculating your GPA here, note that credit points per unit vary between 6 and 12 depending on your university — check your handbook for the exact values.
