Pakistani universities regulated by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) use a 4.0-point GPA scale that is similar to the American system. The standard grade mapping is: A (4.0, 85–100%), A- (3.67, 80–84%), B+ (3.33, 75–79%), B (3.0, 70–74%), B- (2.67, 65–69%), C+ (2.33, 60–64%), C (2.0, 55–59%), C- (1.67, 50–54%), D (1.0, 40–49%), and F (0.0, below 40%). The minimum passing grade at most HEC-recognised institutions is a D (40%).
Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) is calculated by multiplying each course grade point by its credit hours, summing the products, and dividing by total credit hours. HEC requires all accredited universities to maintain transcripts using this standardised GPA system, which has simplified the process of comparing academic performance across institutions.
A CGPA of 3.0 or above is considered good in the Pakistani system and is the typical minimum for postgraduate admission. For competitive programmes such as HEC Indigenous PhD Scholarships or Fulbright applications, a CGPA of 3.5 or above is usually expected. Since the Pakistani 4.0 scale closely mirrors the US system, international conversions are relatively straightforward. HEC attested transcripts with your CGPA are widely accepted by international universities without additional credential evaluation.
